This is a FREE class for readers of my book Henry and the Chalk Dragon who want to use Henry's story as a springboard for their own creativity! Each lesson includes a writing and/or drawing prompt, ideas for creative activities, and at least one optional group activity for a family to do together. Videos offer creative inspiration and encouragement, writing advice, and a behind-the-scenes look at the writing process and some of the ways in which my own journey as an artist intersects with Henry's. Also included are downloadable coloring pages, bookmarks, and a \"Knight of La Muncha\" certificate for those who finish.

Recommended age level: 8 and up (younger kids may need a parent's assistance)

Henry and the Chalk Dragon by Jennifer Trafton (Rabbit Room Press, 2017). Click here to order from the Rabbit Room store.
One other book chosen from a list of classics in Lesson 1 (can be checked out of the library).

Materials needed:

a notebook and pencil or pen for writing activities
a blank sketchbook or drawing pad, preferably with a plain cover that can be decorated/personalized
construction paper in many different colors
craft scissors
glue or a glue stick
crayons, markers, and/or colored pencils
for optional family activities: larger sheets of blank white paper

About the class format:

Since this is a self-paced Individual Study course, it does not include feedback from the teacher or interaction with other students. This class format works best when students are self-motivated or have a parent monitoring their work. They will get out of the class what they put into it. Therefore, students who put serious time and effort into writing activities will have a richer online learning experience than those who do not.

If you are going through the class as a family, you only need to register ONCE. No need to have separate accounts for each child.

This class is self-paced. Students can start whenever they want, work at their own pace, and take as long as they like to finish.
Each lesson (4 total) includes video instruction from the teacher and a series of creative activities that should take approximately 1-2 hours to complete.
Easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions include videos to watch, written lessons to read, assignments to write, and activities to enjoy individually or with a family or group.
